Travertine is an unusual natural stone surface material that has an appearance between that of limestone and finished marble. It has a fibrous appearance that, in some cases, has troughs and pitted holes on its surface.
It is softer than marble and is also significantly more porous, vulnerable to scratching, heat, and acid spills. It functions best as a decorative surface for this reason.
